South Padre Island has activities for the whole group.
Fishing - The island has some of the best shallow sport fishing in the country. Day trips on the bay side can be taken via group boat trips or small charters. Fishing the Gulf is a longer trip with much bigger catches. Otherwise, our Jetties in Isla Blanca Park and various fishing piers make for a fine day of fishing.
Eco-Tourism - SPI is one of the most unique ecological locations. Our Laguna Madre Bay is home and hatchery to an enormous array of fish, sea turtles and dolphins. Be sure to take a dolphin cruise or eco-tour boat trip on the bay. Sea Turtles, Inc. is a local non-profit organization that has been rescuing and rehabilitating turtles for years. Tour their facility to learn about and see these amazing creatures up close. Bird watching is considered best on the island's bayside wetlands. Be sure to walk the nature trail near the convention center for a great view.
Water Sports - Visitors to the area can experience an array of water activities. Jet Skis and kayaks can be rented. Surf is often best at the Isla Blanca Park. Boards can be rented and surf lessons are available. Parasailing is a popular fun activity. Many guests come to South Padre to experience some of the finest wind surfing and kite boarding in the world. Plus there is always boating, boogie boarding, body boarding and swimming in the sea!
Beaching - Our beaches are wide, sandy and easy to walk. Take a stroll or rent umbrellas and chairs and spend the day. Dogs on leashes are allowed and our water is warm enough to play in almost year round. The beach can be accessed at designated points on every other city block. Otherwise, for a small fee you can drive on the north beach at Andy Bowie Park or spend the day at Isla Blanca Park to enjoy the facilities.
Island Travel - The island is great for walking, biking, roller blading or skateboarding. Vehicles are easy to park but, not absolutely necessary. All sorts of island style vehicles can be rented including bikes, tandem bikes, scooters, and electric cars.
Dining - Local fare includes fresh gulf shrimp, local fish, and excellent mexican inspired cuisine. You can dine on the bayfront and enjoy the sunset view at restaurants like Amberjacks, Louie's Backyard, Palm Street Pier and more. Gulf front casual dining can be found at Wanna Wanna or Boomerang Billies. Don't forget to stop in at local favorites like Blackbeards, Palmetto Inn, DaPizza Joint and The Grapevine Cafe.
Mexico - We are located only 30 minutes from the Mexican border. Passports are recommended. Visitors can park on the US side and walk to bridge or drive across with inspection. Once across the border guests can shop at the well-known Garcia's department store or take a taxi to the market area. Many fine restaurants offer excellent cuisine and clubs have nightlife. Our border crossing is well traveled but, visitors should go in groups and remember to be aware of their surroundings.
